New capacitive coupled superharmonic quadrature LC-VCO
نویسندگان
چکیده
A study of some reported LC quadrature voltagecontrolled oscillators (LC-QVCO) is performed in which it is shown that robustness of the quadrature oscillation varies depending on the coupling configuration. Next, a new superharmonic LC-QVCO is proposed in which the common source node in either of two identical crossconnected LC-VCOs is coupled via a capacitor to the node common between the two varactors in the LC tank of the other LC-VCO. In the proposed coupling configuration there exists a closed loop through which the second harmonic signals circulate. A qualitative argument is presented to justify the robustness of the quadrature nature of the proposed QVCO by applying the Barkhausen phase criterion to the second harmonic signals in the loop. Since the coupling devices are only two capacitors, no extra noise sources and power consumption are added to the core VCOs. A Monte Carlo simulation showed that the phase error of the proposed QVCO is no more than 1o. Also, generalizing this method to several numbers of VCOs in a loop, multiphase signals can be generated. The proposed circuits were designed using a 0.18-μm RF CMOS technology and simulation results are presented.

Low Noise Phase CMOS Quadrature VCO with Superharmonic Coupling Using Cross-Couple Pair
This paper aims to introduce a quadrature VCO (voltage control oscillator) which applies superharmonic coupling. The presented quadrature VCO is suitable to be used, both with 2 × subharmonic mixers, as well as 4× subharmonic mixers. It would be impossible to avoid the presence of harmonics in CMOS VCO circuits. These harmonics are in general, undesirable signals which tend to accompany the des...

A new concept for quadrature coupling of oscillators is introduced and demonstrated on a 5-GHz CMOS voltagecontrolled oscillator (VCO). It uses the second harmonic of the outputs to couple the oscillators. The technique provides quadrature over a wide tuning range without introducing any increase in phase noise or power consumption. The VCO is tunable between 4.57 and 5.21 GHz and has a phase n...

This thesis presents a backgate coupled QVCO with current reused structure, and complementary cross-coupled differential Colpitts VCO and QVCO. The formally proposed QVCO not only dissipates significantly lower power but also improves 1/ƒ close-in phase noise, compared to the conventional QVCO. For verification of the suggested idea, the proposed QVCO designed for 2 GHz operation based on a 0.1...

To qualify the condition of a multi standard and a multi band transceiver, a quadrature voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), which has a wide and proper tuning range, is necessary, while providing high phase noise performance and consuming low current. In this paper, a dual band quadrature VCO in 0.18 μm CMOS process is proposed. To attain the dual band operation, a reconfigureurable LC tank is...
